As someone who is pragmatic, I understand where you`re coming from. But a powerful source that people continuously forget to take into the account is the mind itself.

In a world where science is becoming a trump card over many subjects, belief is finding it's way out of the pattern. Although "religion" has no scientific background to it, what makes it powerful is that it has the capability of tricking someone - thus tricking the mind. If you can convince yourself that carrying a rock in your pocket will make you less stressful, guess what? You'll subconsciously take what would normally be a stressful event, less stressing.

Mind over matter is a powerful, proven tool/experience. I agree that the stones have no actual properties, but the belief and meaning behind them can have an affect on the ignorant.

So as they say, ignorance is bliss - good for them!

In that case I should assume that we should be prepared for not only a peaceful visit, but for a hostile visit as well. Aether way it makes sense, i mean what you said and hawking said, the same way as any other practical application of Drake's Equation to Fermi's paradox. And yes Dr. Plait I find it your view very rational and most likely, but because Drake and Fermi are very good players.... assuming endless ways of possible contacts and find which one is most likely is really hard to figure out.

Well, I said that my scenario was "more likely" than Hawking's, and even point out that doesn't mean it's actually likely. Almost any scenario involving a practical application of Drake's Equation to Fermi's Paradox involves assuming motives, which is not a great game to play.

Uh, ¿sólo orbitar? ¿Sin aterrizar en la Luna aún siquiera? Yo no lo haría así, y no creo que se llegue a hacer en realidad… Veo mucho más útil desarrollar la tecnología de alunizaje antes :S

Además una base lunar sería necesaria antes de llegar a Marte, todavía hay muchas cosas por aprender y muchos problemas (que aún no han surgido) por resolver…
